Human Medicine: Ethical Perspectives on Today's Medical Issues
Published in Paperback by Fortress Press (October, 1984)
Authors: James B. Nelson, Jo Anne Smith Rohricht, and Jo A. Rohricht
Average review score:

Well Done Compendium of Medical Ethics/Mod. Christian View
Coming from a moderate-to-liberal Protestant Christian position (both authors are from Union Theological Seminary of Twin Cities), this book presents an intro to the field of medical ethics.

This was included in required reading list of grad. course on bioethics, and thus provides adequate overview of the subject matter.

Although more conservative Christians will not agree with many of the ethical statements, this certainly provides a view for where many are coming from in this growing field of importance. The views on abortion are slanted towards pro-choice, however most of the time seeks to present a balanced opinion.

One of my areas of interest is an example of such balance, the area of informed consent,e.g. "We distort the larger issues of human research when we absolutize either side of the question-means or ends, present or future, individual or society. There is undeniable truth on both sides. We are on better ground if we pose the question in terms of responsibility. The researcher is responsible to the welfare of the subjects of the experiment. Their free humanity cannot be violated without impunity. The researcher is also responsible for the welfare of the larger society. There is potential harm in not doing research as well as risks of doing it. Beyond these affirmations, we who attempt to perceive the world through Christian lenses affirm our responsibility to God."

Hunters in the Shallows: A History of the Pt Boat
Published in Hardcover by Brasseys, Inc. (August, 1998)
Author: Curtis L. Nelson
Average review score:

Objective, incisive, knowlegable, a valuable resource
Mr. Nelson has produced a well researched and thoughtful, objective look at a topic that has been of great interest to me (Vietnam-era Navy Vet). This book is more of a strategic review of the mission of the PT boat than a retelling of individual events, yet it is still an enjoyable read for the PT buff as well as historian. His analysis of the PT's torpedo attacks in all the theaters of WWII (especially at the Battle of Surigao Strait, P.I.) takes on a subject, untouched in any previous book, with logic and authority. He sheds new light on the oft-told PT 109 story. The author raises the achievement and ability of the PT to assume the non-torpedo role of gunboat (in the South/SWest Pacific) when the Navy had no purpose-designed vessels for "littoral warfare". Lessons from the past have bearing on the future as today's small, flash-point conventional conflicts have proven. "Hunters in the Shadows" is a great add to any PT boat library; it stands up there with "At Close Quarters" and the superb photo-essays of authors Al Ross and Victor Cuhn, to name a few. It is also a tribute to the men who served on and serviced the "wooden wonders." (check out the PT Boat Museum's Website for more about these remarkable vessels)

I'll Be With You Always
Published in Hardcover by Brooks Books (July, 1998)
Authors: Joni Earekson Tada, Craig Nelson, and Joni Eareckson Tada
Average review score:

Great for grandparents/or parents to give to children
A fathers love will surpass any worldly fame or problems a child might feel. Parents encourage their children to become all they can be and instinctively know when they need to "come home" to the kind of love and encouragement only a loving parent can give. This tender book can be a spiritual reminder of God's "fatherly" love for each of his children.

I'll Pray for You: A Personal Photo Prayer Journal
Published in Spiral-bound by Philemon Press (April, 2002)
Authors: Betty Young, Sara Nelson, and Theresa L. Gilbride
Average review score:

Prayers Answered
I'm always telling people "I'll Pray for You". Before I had this journal, I would pray for a few days and then forget.

With this journal, I am reminded on a daily basis of my promises to pray.

And, because I have photos of the people I am praying for placed in the photo pockets of the journal, I am able to visualize them more vividly and pray with more passion.

It is mind-boggling to see just how many prayers are answered!

The Imperial Rockefeller: A Biography of Nelson A. Rockefeller
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (April, 1983)
Author: Joseph Persico
Average review score:

An Excellent Biography!
This was a very good writing of the life story of Nelson A.
Rockefeller. This book tells you of the wealth that Rockefeller was raised in. It then takes him to adulthood. His years of government service are well covered by the author. His four terms as the Governor of the state of New York are documented. His term as Vice-President of the United States is also in this
book. His being dropped from the Republican ticket is also told
in detail in this book. Rockefeller's life is well covered in this book. His service is unquestioned. You will also notice that
Rockefeller was the force that brought several good people to government service. Buy this book and read it. You will not be
dissapointed.

In Ole Virginia: Or Marse Chan and Other Stories (Southern Classics Series (Nashville, Tenn.).)
Published in Paperback by J S Sanders & Co (August, 1991)
Authors: Thomas Nelson Page and Clyde N. Wilson
Average review score:

Origin of the Plantation Tradition in American Letters
Although the dialect rendering of Black English in these short stories may offend today's delicate politcal sensibilities, the reader should bear in mind that these stories were written in another century for a different audience. Get past that, and you have pure Plantation Tradition - the same tradition that inspired Margaret Mitchell and disgusted William Faulkner, James Branch Cabell, and Ellen Glasgow. The stories are simple, sincere and guaranteed to elicit emotion. Marse Chan is an American Classic, and No Haid Pawn has been likened to a tale of Poe. Get this, read it, and if you don't see life in Ante-bellum Virginia as it was, you can see it as Page thought it should have been.

In Pursuit of Gender: Worldwide Archaeological Approaches (Gender and Archaeology Series, V. 1)
Published in Paperback by Altamira Pr (15 February, 2002)
Authors: Sarah M. Nelson and Myriam Rosen-Ayalon
Average review score:

Authoritative, comprehensive, informative, scholarly.
In Pursuit Of Gender: Worldwide Archaeological Approaches is an impressive compendium of contributions by distinguished and notable feminist archaeologists dedicated to an examination of the role gender has played in the developing field of archaeology. The contributed essays document how sites and cultures have been interpreted (or reinterpreted) from the perspective of gender, exploding old and fundamentally flawed assumptions about women and the roles they held. In Pursuit Of Gender offers an authoritative, comprehensive, scholarly discussion of gender archaeology in Asia and Africa, as well as in North and South America. Societies represented include those of the hunter-gather; early horticulturalists, incipient and well-developed states; historical communities; and ethnoarchaeological explorations.... In Pursuit Of Gender is a highly recommended and welcome addition to reading lists and reference collections in the academic fields of Archaeology; Women's Studies; and the History of Science.
